Cleaning your Upholstery
Upholstery fabrics will inevitably get dirty from everyday use and in particular accidents involving children and pets can mean you need to take decisive action. We have all either spilt something on a sofa ourselves or had a dog jump on our favourite armchair leaving marks on the fabric that in the moment may appear to have ruined the piece of furniture. Upholstery fabric can be delicate and this means that you need to use specific techniques to clean it thoroughly and make sure that the integrity of the fabric remains. Below is a brief guide on how to make sure you take the best course of action when an inevitable accident occurs:
1 – Firstly assess the piece of upholstery that you are about to clean identifying the type of material and soiling. You must consider if the material in question has any existing damage and if the furniture item contains a filling. On top of this another consideration is if there is any damage to the construction of the furniture itself.
2 – Clean the fabric with a vacuum to remove all loose debris making sure that you get into all the seams and crevices that may have been affected. You need to clean the fabric using a recommended fabric cleaner and apply the product with a suitable cleaning implement, preferably one that is double-sided and will not cause any damage to delicate fibres.
3 – If a solid like soil has been involved then gently agitate the fabric using the rough side of your cleaning implement to release and suspend the solid.
4 – Once you have applied the fabric cleaner you will have to rinse the cleaner from the fabric using hot water extraction. It is best to use a machine that uses as little water as possible and doesn’t force the water through the backing as it will cause problems with soaking to the upholstery filling.
5 – Now that you have rinsed off all of the fabric cleaner you need to dry the fabric as quickly as possible. The best way to do this is to use a turbo dryer which is a specialised piece of equipment and should dry your upholstery in less than an hour.
If you are unsure about any of this process then I would advise that you seek the help of a professional who has been trained by a reputable company. Better still seek a company that offers a range of professional domestic and commercial cleaning services such as Marks Cleaning Services.
